7—School

School was likely to have been—for most of us reading this—a deeply awful experience. The difficulty wasn’t so much the homework, the boredom of lessons and the discipline of the teachers, however arduous these may have been. The difficulty would more likely have stemmed from having to live for most of the day within a totalitarian hierarchical value system—policed by a pitiless mob.

Depending on the school, what mattered above all would have been to be fashionable, thin, beautiful, sporty or strong. Anything else would have quickly marked us out for sabotage and destruction. If we preferred to read poetry, to lie on the carpet drawing flowers, to sing songs by Schubert, to pick our spots, to bake banana cake or to talk in a beguiling childlike way to our teddies, our fates would have been sealed. If we ever made a mistake (kissed the wrong person, made an unwise revelation to a jealous friend), there would have been no possibility of being forgiven: our classmates would have remembered everything until the day we left, and walking into the cafeteria at lunchtime would have been a trauma on every new occasion.
